Yes - the 2.8L GD engine is a robust, well-regarded platform that handles tuning well within safe limits. We keep boost pressure, exhaust gas temperatures and fuelling within conservative margins, and we log EGTs under load to confirm the turbo isn't being stressed. The GD engine is used in some of New Zealand's hardest-working vehicles, and we treat reliability as non-negotiable when calibrating it.
Absolutely - the GR Supra uses BMW's B58 3.0T engine, which is one of the best tuning platforms available. Stage 1 typically delivers 50–75kW, taking a standard A90 Supra from 285kW to 335–360kW. With supporting hardware (intake, downpipe), Stage 2 can push past 400kW. The Supra has a dedicated tuning community globally, and calibration strategies for the B58 are well-developed and thoroughly proven.
A Hilux 2.8L GD diesel typically gains 80–120Nm of torque on Stage 1, along with 25–40kW of additional power. That takes a standard SR5 from around 150kW / 500Nm to approximately 185–190kW / 580–620Nm. The gains are most noticeable in the 1,800–2,800RPM range - exactly where you're working when towing, loaded up or climbing a grade. It's a genuinely transformative upgrade for a working Hilux.
Not when done correctly and conservatively. Toyota's GD and KD diesel engines are over-engineered - they're designed to run at high load in demanding environments for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. A Stage 1 tune that respects safe operating limits doesn't meaningfully change that lifespan. What does affect reliability is aggressive tuning that pushes EGTs too high, or neglecting oil changes after tuning. We recommend sticking to 10,000km service intervals or shorter with a quality synthetic oil.
