Yes, when calibrated carefully and run on quality fuel. Subaru boxer engines are generally robust, but the EJ-series in particular benefits from conservative boost targets and careful knock management. We run all Subaru tunes on 98 RON and log knock sensor activity and AFRs throughout the rev range before finalising the calibration. The FA20 and FA24 in the current WRX are better-behaved engines with more consistent knock response, making them very strong tuning platforms.
We strongly recommend 98 RON for any tuned Subaru, particularly EJ-engined STIs. 95 RON is the minimum for a tuned WRX, and even then the calibration is more conservative. New Zealand's Z, BP and Gull 98 are all fine. Avoid E10 blends on older EJ engines unless specifically calibrated for it. The performance difference between 95 and 98 RON in a tuned Subaru is noticeable - you'll feel the ignition timing advance and the engine pulling more cleanly at higher load.
A current WRX with the FA24 engine typically gains 35–50kW and 80–110Nm on Stage 1, taking it from around 202kW to 240–250kW. The previous FA20 WRX (2014–2021) gains a similar amount. Both respond well to 98 RON and see the biggest gains in the 2,500–4,500RPM range - which is where the WRX lives most of the time. An STI on Stage 1 gains 25–40kW, with larger gains available on Stage 2 with the right supporting hardware.
A catback exhaust alone doesn't justify a Stage 2 tune - Stage 2 typically requires a front-pipe or downpipe change (which reduces restriction) along with an intake. With a turbo-back exhaust and intake, Stage 2 on the FA24 WRX can deliver 55–75kW over stock and push past 260kW. If you've only done a catback, a Stage 1 tune is the right call. We'll assess your current modifications and recommend the appropriate stage.
