Yes - Saab's B-series turbo engines are famously robust platforms with strong internals. They've been tuned by enthusiasts globally for decades, and the B235 in particular handles significantly elevated power levels in Stage 2 and beyond with the right supporting modifications. Stage 1 calibration is well within the engine's proven capabilities. We run Saab tunes on NZ 98 RON and log boost, knock and AFR data before finalising every calibration.
For a genuine Stage 1 tune, no hardware changes are required. The factory intercooler, injectors and turbo are sufficient for Stage 1 power levels on B205 and B235 engines. For higher-output Stage 2 tuning, an uprated intercooler and larger injectors are typically recommended, and some owners opt for an uprated blow-off valve. We'll advise on your specific engine build and goals before recommending a tune level.
A Saab 9-3 Turbo with the B205 2.0T gains 25–40kW on Stage 1, typically moving from around 110–129kW to 140–165kW. The B235 2.3T in the 9-5 Aero or high-output 9-3 gains 30–45kW, moving from around 151kW to 180–195kW. The 2.8T V6 Aero gains 30–50kW. More than the peak power numbers, the turbo response improvement is the defining change - boost comes sooner and more predictably, which transforms the driving experience.
Yes - 98 RON is strongly recommended for any tuned B-series Saab turbo. The Trionic engine management system is sensitive to fuel quality, and the ignition advance that delivers the performance gains requires premium octane to function without knock retard. Running 95 RON will cause the ECU to pull timing, reducing the benefit of the tune. On a car as tuning-capable as a Saab, running premium fuel is a modest investment for a significant performance difference.
