Yes - the B48 is BMW's current main turbocharged four-cylinder, used across a wide range from the 118i to the M135i xDrive. The Cooper S runs the same engine at around 141kW while the M135i pushes 225kW from identical hardware. This demonstrates the internals are well within safe territory at Stage 1 power levels. We validate on NZ 98 RON and log boost and knock behaviour across the rev range before delivery.
Yes - the N14 and N18 turbocharged engines in earlier Cooper S and JCW models have a well-developed global tuning track record. The N14 in particular responds strongly, with Stage 1 gains of 25–40kW. These engines do require more attention to knock management than the newer B48, and running 98 RON is strongly recommended. We've tuned many N14 and N18 Minis - they're enjoyable platforms with a solid community base of supporting knowledge.
A JCW with the B48 2.0T (around 170kW standard) typically gains 25–40kW on Stage 1, pushing it to 195–210kW. With supporting hardware (intake, catless downpipe), Stage 2 can approach 240kW. The JCW already has a sharper factory tune than the Cooper S, but there's still meaningful headroom - particularly in the 2,500–4,500RPM band where the Mini character really lives. The improvement in driving feel is immediate and significant.
The Aisin 7-speed automatic in the Countryman and Clubman handles Stage 1 torque levels well. The 6-speed Getrag manual in the JCW is robust by design. If you're planning Stage 2 with significant power increases, the manual gearbox benefits from upgraded clutch components, and we'll advise accordingly. For Stage 1 on either gearbox type, no additional transmission work is required.
