Yes - the Smartstream and Theta II turbocharged engines are modern, well-built platforms with good internals and clear factory headroom. The i30N in particular uses a version of the same engine found in higher-output global variants, which shows the hardware can handle more than the NZ-market tune allows. We validate all Hyundai tunes on NZ 98 RON fuel, logging boost response and knock activity throughout the rev range.
Yes - the 1.6T Smartstream in the Tucson N Line and standard Tucson gains 25–40kW and 50–80Nm on Stage 1. It transforms the Tucson from a competent family SUV into something genuinely quick. The Smartstream engine is modern and well-managed, responding cleanly to calibration with no rough edges. If you regularly drive the Tucson on motorways or with passengers, the extra mid-range torque makes it noticeably more relaxed and confident.
An i30N Performance with the 2.0T Theta II gains 35–55kW on Stage 1, taking it from around 202kW to 240–255kW. The i30N is already a well-calibrated hot hatch, but the factory tune still leaves performance on the table. The mid-range gains are most noticeable - the car pulls more strongly from 2,500–5,000RPM, making it more rewarding on mountain roads and quicker in real-world overtaking situations.
On diesel CRDi models, yes - the extra torque means less throttle at cruise speeds, and many owners report 5–8% improvement in highway economy. On petrol models, the result depends on driving style. The engine becomes more efficient at a given load, but if you use the extra performance regularly, fuel consumption stays similar or increases slightly. For a daily driver where you're not always pushing hard, a Stage 1 tune often has a neutral effect on economy.
