Yes - both platforms are robust, well-proven engines with extensive tuning track records across the GM truck ecosystem. The EcoTec3 V8 uses Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), which we specifically account for in the calibration to ensure smooth transitions between 4 and 8-cylinder operation post-tune. The Duramax diesel handles Stage 1 calibration within safe boost and EGT limits, validated under load.
No - we calibrate around the AFM system rather than disabling it. The cylinder deactivation continues to function as designed, providing fuel economy benefits at cruise. Some tuners disable AFM entirely, but we prefer to maintain it because it's a genuine fuel efficiency benefit for highway driving. If you're experiencing AFM-related issues (lifter noise, rough running on deactivation), that's a separate mechanical concern worth addressing before or alongside tuning.
A Sierra with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 gains 25–40kW and 50–80Nm on Stage 1. A 6.2L EcoTec3 gains 30–50kW. The Canyon Duramax 2.8L diesel gains 70–100Nm, which makes a genuine difference when towing trailers, boats or equipment over NZ's hilly terrain. The extra torque reduces throttle demand under load, which in turn reduces transmission temperatures and improves fuel economy on long towing runs.
On Duramax diesel models, yes - commonly 5–8% improvement on sustained highway drives. The extra torque reduces throttle demand to maintain cruise speed. On V8 petrol models, the AFM system already provides highway economy benefits, and the tune's contribution is modest - expect 3–5% improvement in the best case when driving conservatively.
