Yes - both are high-performance engines with proven internal strength. The EA888 Gen 4 in the Leon VZ is the same engine used in the Golf R and Audi S3, running safely at much higher power levels than the standard Cupra map. The EA855 Evo 2.5T five-cylinder in the VZ5 is a flagship performance unit with very strong internals. Stage 1 calibration on either operates comfortably within safe limits. We run all Cupra tunes on NZ 98 RON and log boost and knock data before delivery.
Yes - we strongly recommend combining engine and DSG tuning on Cupra models. The DSG7 DQ381 in the Leon VZ and Formentor is the same gearbox used in the Golf R, and it handles Stage 1 torque levels well. However, a DSG tune dramatically improves the overall driving experience - sharper shift timing, stronger clutch engagement and a more purposeful delivery that matches the engine's improved output. The difference is immediately noticeable when driving back-to-back.
A Formentor VZ5 with the EA855 Evo 2.5T five-cylinder (standard 294kW) gains 30–50kW on Stage 1, pushing it past 325–345kW. That's a genuinely significant step forward from an already very rapid car. The five-cylinder's unique character - its sound, its power delivery, its throttle feel - is enhanced rather than changed by a good calibration. Stage 2 with intake and exhaust work can take it even further.
Yes - 98 RON is essential for any tuned EA888 or EA855 Cupra. The performance gains come partly from ignition timing advance that requires premium octane to avoid knock. Running 95 RON will cause the ECU to retard timing, reducing the benefit of the tune and potentially causing the car to feel no different than standard. We calibrate specifically on NZ 98 RON and it's a non-negotiable fuel requirement post-tune.
