Yes - the B48 and B58 engines are widely regarded as excellent tuning platforms with strong internals and factory safety margins. A Stage 1 tune that stays within safe boost, timing and AFR limits has no meaningful impact on engine longevity. BMW engines are intentionally de-tuned at the factory; the M versions of the same engines often run significantly more power on identical hardware, which gives you a clear picture of the available headroom.
The ZF 8-speed used in most BMW models is an excellent transmission, but its factory shift logic is calibrated for comfort and fuel economy rather than performance. A transmission tune tightens shift timing, improves torque converter lockup and raises the torque limit to match the remapped engine. We recommend combining engine and transmission tuning for the best result - the gearbox tune alone often makes a noticeable difference to how responsive the car feels.
A B48-powered 320i typically gains 35–50kW and 80–110Nm on Stage 1, taking it from around 135kW to 170–185kW. A B58 340i or 440i can gain 50–75kW, bringing output close to M3 territory without the M premium. Diesel models like the 320d see strong torque increases of 80–120Nm, which makes a noticeable difference for towing or pulling hills around Auckland.
A remap will technically void the powertrain warranty on a vehicle still under BMW cover, which is worth considering for newer cars. That said, most BMW owners in NZ tuning their cars are outside the factory warranty period. Oil change intervals should be maintained or shortened after tuning - BMW's variable service intervals can stretch too long for a tuned engine, and we recommend sticking to annual or 10,000km changes with a quality full-synthetic oil.
